Hydrochloric acid is a strong inorganic acid. Chemically pure hydrochloric acid is a colourless, transparent liquid. Technical hydrochloric acid may be yellowish due to contaminants, mainly of iron ions.
Concentrated hydrochloric acid has a pungent odour and smokes in moist air.
